TESTING
FOR ACROBAT READER
You will need Acrobat Reader
to access the various PDF files on The Conscience of 294. To test
whether it is installed in your system, click on a document selection.
If after a time, a window opens with the first page of a file in it, then
you have it. If problems arise from the use of the version of Reader you
have, you will need to upgrade to Reader 4.0. If Reader is not present on
your hard drive, you will probably get a dialogue box of some sort, asking
which application you wish to use to open the file.
DOWNLOADING AND
SETTINGS FOR ACROBAT READER
Use the graphical links provided here or on the
CO294 homepage to access the Adobe web site and follow the instructions to
download a free copy of Acrobat Reader 4.0.
This next part is important. To view these files from this site properly
using a web browser, especially the document files, you must open Reader and
on the menu choose
"File">"Preferences">"General" and make
sure the "Web browser integration" option is NOT checked. If it is
checked, your computer will lock up when you try to scroll or search through
the large documents with a web browser. If you do not employ a web browser,
try both settings to see which works best.
PDF FILE DOWNLOAD
OPTIONS
Clicking on a selection will bring up a dialogue
box asking whether you wish to open the file from its location or download
to save it to disk. If you wish to view online only, select "open from
present location". You may also download your own copy to your hard
drive by selecting "save to disk", where it will function much
faster. If viewing online, allow time for the file to download,
especially the larger document or UPS Yours files, which may take a few
minutes on a normal telephone connection.
Once visible, you will be able to scroll or search
with good speed.
USING PDF FILES
The PDF files on the Documents
Page appear with a bookmarks column on the left and the file text on the
right. These bookmarks provide an index which will take the viewer to that
portion of the document when clicked. If you wish to search these documents
by using keywords then click on the binoculars icon on the Reader toolbar to
initiate the "Find" feature and follow the instructions. Clicking
the same button again will allow you to find the next occurrence of the
keyword you entered. To print forms, click the printer icon on the toolbar.
No other settings need be made to your printer. Reader does the rest with
great results. You may also print out contract documents in the same manner
but they run from 37 pages for the Bylaws to 105 pages for the UPS Master
Agreement.
